LOS ANGELES, Calif — Twenty years ago, when the YouTube founders were still in short pants, way before anyone used the term “user generated content,” America’s Funniest Home Videos came onto the scene and remains one of TV’s biggest success stories.

On Sunday night (4/18), the ABC show won the ratings for the 7 p.m. hour, besting “60 Minutes” and “Dateline,” and is part of a resurgent ABC line-up, according to Radio & Television Report. It was the show’s strongest showing this year with 6.7 million viewers.

We visited the Vin Di Bona Productons, the Los Angeles-based television production company that has produced America’s Funniest Home Videos since it debuted in 1990. We interviewed Bayard Jones, project manager for the program.

In earlier days, videos were submitted as VHS tapes by mail, now they are submitted via a Web interface powered by Kyte. The production company receives hundreds of submissions per day and uses Kyte for project management.

Selected videos are produced for broadcast, while several more are published online by the network.
